Q&A w/iS'BUSISOESKHULU on collab EP with CleanJunkie ,titled P.C.R.

iS'BUSISOESKHULU

CleanJunkie
iS'BUSISOESKHULU (born Sibusiso Khumalo), is a 24 year old singer/songwriter from Protea North, Soweto.
A genre-fluid artist who always aims to share his experiences of his surroundings in the city, the Kasi and even the burbs. He started out writing songs in class at the age of 16, then singing/rapping over beats made by his closest friends from the Kasi during his free time. His inspirations don't necessarily come from individual artists or groups but from sounds, colours, instruments and genres he's heard since birth till present day. From a sonics perspective, he found inspiration within the genres of jazz, afrobeat, hip hop & electronic music.

iS'BUSISOESKHULU collaborated with producer and long time friend, CleanJunkie on a 3 track EP titled, P.C.R. The EP was released on the 26th of January 2024. We had a little Q&A with iS'BUSISOESKHULU on his latest offering.
1. What inspired the title behind the EP?
I wish I had a profound response but PCR is just an acronym for the three tracks on the EP: Pressure, Cause & Effect and Respawn Point. That's basically it. The title is inspired by the names of the songs
2. Three words that best describe your project?
Mzonkonko, Groovy, Soulful
3. The EP has a distinctive blend of sound, what is it called?
iS'BUSISOESKHULU: It's difficult to say what it is because there's a bit of something in the sound but the inspiration lies in afrobeat, soul, indie and a couple of other things.
CleanJunkie : When making this EP I tried to combine a bunch of musical elements such as afrobeat, bossa nova, piano and a bit of soul. I wouldn't really give it a name as the intention is for the audience to make it out for themselves. I'm not too fixated in coining a term for the sounds I make. I just explore and experiment. I'm a student of the game
4. How did the collaborations between you and CleanJunkie come about?
Myself and CleanJunkie have been friends for close to 10 years now, we started out making music and songs together, granted he had a head start so he's been one of the reasons I do Music. These collaborations started then and we've developed a natural back and forth when it comes to sending each other ideas that blossom into songs. This project is just one of those things where he sent me the crafted beats and I had to create something out of it. We're musically joint at the hip like that.
5. Favourite track on the project and why?
It changes everytime and depends on the day, but today I can say Respawn Point.
It's a song that grows on you gradually, first the beat and it's sounds then the words or phrases you could pick up when listening. On a more personal view, it represents coming back home after fighting for your life outside, recharging your inner battery then getting ready to head back out
6. What can people expect from you this year?
Pleasant Surprises and a gradual exploration of my musical interests and niche through more singles and a couple more projects. They could also expect visuals and performances
If you haven't heard P.C.R, you can check it out on ALL DSPs.
