Q&A w/K!no on NEW project,
Dead D!ary EP.
K!no finally dropped her EP, Dead D!ary with lead singles Sweet Caramel and Dreamy Love, giving listeners an insight into her artistry and romantic experiences. The EP hit the steaming stores on the 27th of October 2023. We got to pick her brain on her latest offering and here's how how it went down.
1. What's the meaning behind the EP's title?
The title 'DEAD D!ARY' gets its name from the fact that the songs on the project reflect things that I have already gone through and moved on from . The intro song 'dead diary' which is also the project title explains that the songs are like entries from a journal that I wrote when I could not find words to express myself.
2. Three words that best describe your project?
Sentimental, relatable and sexy.
3. How did your "diary" die?
I buried unsaid thoughts, unsent letters and let go of people and things that did not serve me anymore.
4. In terms of sound, where did you draw inspiration from?
I drew inspiration from soulful music genres like neo-soul, alternative R&B and lo-fi sounds. I look up to artists like Erykah Badu, Jhene Aiko and SZA and they also influenced me into writing original stories in song form or better yet, in an angle that they have not been told. In my own perspective, that is.
5. What was it like workng on the project?
Working on the project was fun because I got to meet and work with very talented people but at the same time it was stressful and costly.
6. Your favourite track off the EP?. and why?
My favourite song on the EP is definitely 'Work of Art' because I wrote it as a way of talking to myself, trying to understand why I make art and validating myself that I am good enough as an artist because a lot of times, I would hide by saying 'i am not ready' or try to find perfection in what i do, only to find out that i was scared to start. The song is also a double entendre as it encourages other artists to do their thing and for non-artists to not be too judgemental of people's art because at the end of the day, they will never understand their artistic perspective. I like to call it the 'artist anthem'
7. Which track has become a fan favourite?
Sweet caramel' is the banger that my supporters loved most but 'lover girl' is catching up.
8. What's next for K!no now that the EP finally dropped?
I will be following the path that the project gravitates me towards but at the same time, I will continue to shape and solidify my name and grow as an artist. There will definitely be more music to come as the Ep was a layering foundation of my image as an artist.
