Have you played the South African mobile game Taxi Ranked?
I was scrolling through reels on Instagram when I stumbled upon a reel showcasing a mobile game app, that seemed to be based on the everyday adventures of Joburg taxi driver. After seeing the reel I quickly rushed to the Google play store to check it out for myself.
Who created it?
The game is called Taxi Ranked and was developed by South African video game developers, Vetkoek Studios. It was released on the 14th of July 2023

The Plot/aim of the game
In the game you take on the role of a Taxi driver rushing through the city of Joburg, picking up passengers, avoiding potholes, collecting coins and occasionally running away from police. It's "an infinite runner " in which players strive to set a high score. You can use the coins you collect in the game to purchase other vehicles & customize your ride.
Our impression of the game:
Although Taxi Ranked is a lot similar to the popular mobile game Subway Surfer, it earns unique points for its South African inspired scenery and aesthetic. It's easy to play, doesn't require internet connection for full enjoyment and free for download. In the climate of loadshedding, it's definitely a fun way to stay occupied when Eskom "flips the switch" in your area.

It's inspiring to see South African innovators come up in the tech space and we would love to see more game developers like Vetkoek Studios make waves.
